Unofficial Answers to an (In)Frequently Asked Question

Introduction

Okay, so someone other than me should be paying closer attention to which questions get asked frequently on s.r.m. But the other day someone kindly pointed out one topic about which a questiom was asked and does get asked frequently in newsgroups, although not so often on s.r.m.  So here it is.  Contributions welcome. Well, groveled for, actually.

(1.) Book of Mormon Changes

Since it's publication in 1830, there have been some changes to the text of the Book of Mormon. That much we can all agree upon.  Where we go from there is where things get interesting.  Typically, the question that gets asked is, essentially, something like the one that

If Joseph Smith were inspired by God to translate the book, why would he need to make corrections to it afterwards?
